Dieter Sauter has lived in Istanbul since 1991.

After getting his degree from the University of Tübingen, Sauter started working for German Television.

Between 1992 - 2005 he was the director of the ARD Studios in Istanbul reporting on Turkey and Iran. He made photographs and approximately 50 documentary films during this period.

Since 2005 he has lived in Istanbul as a freelance author, film director and photographer. He also worked als instructor for film and television at Bilgi University in Istanbul and published 3 books about Turkey since 2005.

He also co-produced the turkish film "Should I really Do It?" in 2008.

Between 2009 and 2010 he holds an photo-exhibition on a photo-project called Faces of Turkey in various cities of Turkey (Diyarbakir, Urfa, Kars, Adana, Antalya, Bursa, Istanbul).

Another photo-exhibition was held during the Filmfestival in Thessaloniki in 2011 and during the Film- and Artfestival in Schwerin in 2014.

From 2010-2012 he shot a documentary (Adieu Istanbul) about the history of the Greek Communitiy in Istanbul. It was shown during the film festivals in Thessaloniki, Istanbul and Ankara 2013-2014.
